I like to think of the ideal social dancer. Either leader or follower, based on mine and Marty's experiences with wonderful dancers. Sort of a personification of the ultimate social dance experience - such as it means and subjective as it is.
Let's call this person the libre passista, an homage to legendary dancers of times long past. Two things would distinguish the libre passista. Two parts of social dance, of which the first is using the dance to express the dictates of the heart.
This can come from practising alone for example. Dancing with oneself, as it were. The second is adapting this self expression to any partner, their proficiency and their musicality. And that definitely comes from social dancing. With many people in many places.
The reality is both self-expression and partner mastery are never end; Ideals are ideal in theory, but can always be bettered. Yet just being aware of these two parts already helps. And it is the beginning to becoming a wonderful social dancer, we think.
